At the end of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells a short story that carries a huge challenge.
Two men build houses. One builds on rock. The other builds on sand. At first, both houses may have looked strong and secure. But then the storms came.
One stood firm. The other collapsed.
Jesus says:
“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”
— Matthew 7:24 (ESV)
Hearing Jesus Is Only the Beginning
One of the most important details in this parable is that both builders heard Jesus’ words.
The difference was not information. It was obedience.
The wise builder listened and acted. The foolish builder listened but ignored what he heard.
That matters for us today too.
It is possible to hear sermons, read Bible verses, or even agree with Jesus’ teachings without actually building our lives around them.
Jesus says the solid foundation comes when we put His words into practice.
Building a Life Block by Block
A strong house is not built overnight.
In the same way, following Jesus is not a one-time moment but a daily decision. We build our lives slowly, choice by choice, habit by habit.
That includes our words, our attitudes, our relationships, and the way we respond to difficult situations.
The more we know Jesus and follow His teaching, the stronger the foundation becomes.
That is why reading Scripture matters so much. The Gospels help us see who Jesus is, what He taught, and how He lived. They shape the way we think and act.
Storms Will Come
One thing Jesus makes very clear is this: following Him does not mean we avoid hardship.
The rain fell on both houses. The winds beat against both homes.
Storms are part of life.
There will be seasons of disappointment, grief, uncertainty, temptation, and struggle. Faith is not a promise of an easy life.
The difference is what your life is built on when those storms arrive.
Sand Can Look Attractive
The foolish builder chose sand.
Maybe it looked easier. Maybe it seemed more comfortable. Maybe he simply did not think deeply about the foundation at all.
That still happens today.
Sometimes the way Jesus calls us to live can seem harder than the alternatives. Forgiveness is harder than bitterness. Integrity is harder than compromise. Faithfulness is harder than selfishness.
But foundations are tested when pressure comes.
The Foundation That Lasts
Jesus says:
“Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”
— Matthew 24:35 (NIV)
Everything else eventually shifts or fades. Success, comfort, popularity, money, even circumstances can change quickly.
But the words of Jesus remain.
That is why building your life on Him is not only the right choice, but the safest one.
So the question this parable leaves us with is simple: what foundation are you building on?
