Come to Me: Why Jesus Calls Ordinary People

In Matthew 4:19, Jesus speaks a simple but life-changing invitation:
“Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.”

When Jesus said these words to Simon Peter and Andrew, they were ordinary fishermen going about an ordinary day. He wasn’t recruiting religious experts or spiritual elites. He was calling everyday people into a new purpose.

“Come to Me” Is an Invitation, Not a Demand

Jesus doesn’t begin with instructions or expectations. He begins with an invitation. Come to me. These words echo throughout the Bible, especially in Matthew 11:28–30, where Jesus invites the weary and burdened to find rest in Him.

This call isn’t about cleaning yourself up first or proving your worth. It’s about drawing close to the One who knows you, created you, and loves you. Jesus invites us to stop running to distractions for healing and instead come to the One who can truly restore our hearts.

“I Will Make You” Speaks of Transformation

Jesus doesn’t say, “Make yourself ready.” He says, “I will make you.” That promise speaks of transformation. Following Jesus means trusting Him to shape our character, grow our faith, and equip us for the life He calls us to live.

God doesn’t call the equipped. He equips the called. Throughout Scripture, we see God choosing people who feel unqualified, ordinary, or unsure, and then working through them by His Spirit. What matters most to Jesus isn’t your background or ability, but your heart.

Fishers of Men: A New Way of Living

Being a “fisher of men” is a picture of sharing God’s love with others. Just as fishermen use different methods to catch fish, followers of Jesus are called to use their unique gifts, personalities, and opportunities to point people toward Him.

This isn’t about pressure or performance. Our role is to plant seeds. God is the One who changes hearts. Sometimes sharing faith feels uncomfortable, but comfort should never matter more than someone else’s eternity. One conversation, one act of kindness, one honest moment can be used by God in powerful ways.

An Invitation for Everyone

Jesus’ call wasn’t just for Peter and Andrew. It’s a call extended to all. It asks us to leave behind old priorities, trust His leadership, and step into a life shaped by faith, purpose, and love.

If you’re feeling weary, uncertain, or unqualified, hear Jesus’ words again today: Come to me. As you follow Him, He promises to lead you, change you, and use your life for something far greater than you could ever imagine.
