The Cross: God’s Answer to Sin and Separation

Why the Cross Still Matters Today

The third symbol in The Four Points is the cross. You see it on necklaces, artwork and church buildings, but at its core it represents something far deeper than a religious decoration. The cross points to the central truth of the Christian faith: Jesus died for us.

A Problem We Couldn’t Fix

The earlier symbols help us understand why the cross is so significant. First, God loves us. His love is unconditional and constant. Second, every one of us has sinned. Sin isn’t just a list of bad choices. It is the deep brokenness within humanity that separates us from God. Romans 3:23 puts it plainly: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Because God is perfectly just, He cannot ignore sin. We feel this in our own sense of justice when we see wrongs that need to be made right. Romans 6:23 says, “The wages of sin is death.” Sin leads to suffering, brokenness and ultimately separation from God.

God’s Rescue Plan

This is where the cross comes in. Jesus, God in human form, entered our world through Mary and lived a sinless life. He never failed, never acted out of selfishness and never deserved punishment. Yet He willingly accepted it. On the cross, Jesus took on the weight of sin as if it were His own.

Romans 5:8 captures this beautifully: “While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus wasn’t being punished for His mistakes. He didn’t have any. He took the punishment we deserved so we could be forgiven and restored.

The Cross as a Bridge

Through His death and resurrection, Jesus bridged the gap sin created. The cross becomes a way back into relationship with God, not because of anything we can earn but because of the gift God freely offers. As Romans 6:23 continues: “But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Turning to God doesn’t mean we never sin again. It means we trust Jesus, we repent when we fall and we walk with Him daily. He promises to be with us through the easy days and the hard ones.

A Step Toward Hope

The cross is not the end of the story. It leads us to a question: how will we respond? That is the focus of the fourth symbol, the question mark, which the next video explores.

Takeaway:

The cross shows us both the seriousness of sin and the depth of God’s love. Jesus gave His life so you could find yours in Him.
