When people think about success, they often think about things that are big, impressive, and impossible to ignore.
Jesus often thought differently.
In Matthew 13, He tells one of His shortest parables:
“The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field. It is the smallest of all seeds, but when it has grown it is larger than all the garden plants and becomes a tree...” (Matthew 13:31–32, ESV)
At first glance, it seems like a simple comparison. But Jesus is teaching something profound about God, faith, and the way His Kingdom works.
God Is Not Discouraged by Small Beginnings
The people listening to Jesus expected God's Kingdom to arrive with power and spectacle. They were looking for something dramatic and unmistakable.
Instead, Jesus points to a seed.
Something tiny. Something easy to overlook.
The listeners could not see what God was doing. They saw a travelling teacher from Nazareth and a small group of followers. What they could not see was that God was building a Kingdom that would spread across the world.
This is good news for us because God still works that way.
He often starts with small beginnings, quiet faithfulness, and ordinary people.
Growth Takes Time
One reason this parable resonates so strongly is that many of us struggle with waiting.
We want quick results. We want immediate change. We want spiritual growth to happen overnight.
But seeds do not become trees in a day.
The same is true in the Christian life.
Learning to trust Jesus takes time. Growing in prayer takes time. Becoming more patient, forgiving, loving, and Christlike takes time.
Sometimes we become discouraged because we expect years of growth in a matter of days.
But God is patient.
“He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.”
— Philippians 1:6 (ESV)
God finishes what He starts.
God Gives the Growth
The mustard seed does not grow because it tries harder.
It grows because it is alive.
Paul captures this beautifully:
“I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth.” (1 Corinthians 3:6, ESV)
That does not mean we do nothing. We pray, read Scripture, obey Jesus, and keep showing up.
But ultimately, God is the one who changes hearts and produces lasting growth.
Is Your Faith Growing?
Many people know Jesus' teaching about faith the size of a mustard seed. Sometimes that can sound discouraging.
But the point is not how large the faith starts.
The point is that it is alive.
The question is not whether your faith is impressive. The question is whether it is growing.
Are you trusting Jesus more than you were a year ago?
Are you becoming more dependent on Him?
Not perfectly. Not instantly. But genuinely.
A Final Encouragement
The parable of the mustard seed invites us to trust God with small beginnings.
Maybe your faith feels small today. Maybe your progress feels slow. Maybe you're wondering whether God is doing anything at all.
Jesus reminds us not to judge too early.
The God who grows mustard seeds is still at work.
And He is not finished yet.
