The X: What the Bible Really Says About Sin

The second symbol in The Four Points is the X. It represents sin and the result of sin, which the Bible describes as death. That can feel like a heavy topic, but understanding it helps us understand why the good news of Jesus is so powerful.

A Universal Problem

Romans 3:23 says: “All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” This includes every one of us. Sin is not just a collection of bad choices. It is a brokenness within humanity that pulls us away from God’s goodness. We see it in our thoughts, our actions and even in our motives. It shows up in selfishness, anger and the moments where we hurt others or even ourselves.

The Bible is honest about what this brokenness leads to. Romans 6:23 says: “The wages of sin is death.” Death here is more than physical. It is the separation that happens when we move away from God, who is the source of life.

Where It Began

To understand why this matters, we look back to Genesis 3. Adam and Eve lived in perfect relationship with God. There was no shame or fear. But a serpent twisted God’s words, and they trusted that lie instead of God’s voice. Their choice introduced sin and death into the world, and we still feel the effects today.

Romans 5:12 explains: “Sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin.” Every broken relationship, every regret and every moment of shame is a reminder of what sin does. James 1 says that when sin grows, it leads to death. It breaks things around us and within us.

The Spiritual Impact

Isaiah 59 tells us that sin creates a separation between us and God. We were made for closeness with Him. When sin gets in the way, we feel the distance. And because He is the source of life, separation from Him brings spiritual death, both now and eternally.

Hope Beyond the X

The message could end there, but it doesn’t. Romans 6:23 continues with hope: “But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Sin is real, but so is God’s rescue. We are not left in separation. God has made a way back to life, and the next step in The Four Points explores that good news.

Takeaway:

Sin explains the problem, but Jesus brings the solution. The X doesn’t end the story. It prepares us to understand the depth of God’s love and the life He offers.
